I was in the audience last night in Welland and was blown away with your performance.

I love your relaxed presence on stage, I felt as if I was sitting in some one's living room just listening to a fabulous story teller singing his stories. GREAT.

During David's performance he sang a song about leaving Scotland. That song hit such a place in my heart that I was not sitting crying, I was sobbing.

When we left Scotland in '73 we had 2 children. Leaving was especially hard on my 7 year old son Scott. You see just like David he was leaving his beloved Granny behind. For the first couple of months, I could hardly get him to eat and he faded away from a rambunctious wee boy too a wee sad soul. He eventually made friends and Granny came for a holiday and all was well. He is now (like David ) fiercely proud of his adopted country and works as a biologist with Parks Canada.

But listening to that sound gave me a insight into that poor wee boys head during those first trying months.

Could you please tell me which album I could find that song on so I can buy it. I would love to share it with my son. (answer: The Parting from Seaway)

I'm a big fan of yours, and have been for quite some time - I'm living in Toronto now but I first started listening to your delightfully sing-along-able music when I was on an internship in Winnipeg - it was the winter of 2002 or 2003 I believe. I was volunteering at the West End Cultural Centre (what a great venue) - your Skating Rink album had just come out, and I just loved your show and have been hooked on your music ever since. Since then I've made an effort to catch your act at folk festivals and concerts whenever I can get the chance. MB

Hugh's Room. When you sang Good King Wenceslas (long, one of my
favourites) it reminded me of a family Christmas sing-a-long where my

this tune. A hilarious and much reminisced Christmas Eve ensued.

Hi David,

I first heard your performance from The Kent Stage at the Kent State Folk Festival and was so intrigued. I enjoy your music very much and it has become a special part of my life. I introduced my 14 year old daughter, Anna, to your music last year and now she is a huge fan. She has all of your cd's on her itouch and came with us to see you at Cain Park this summer. She sat on the lawn with her friend and enjoyed the show and getting to meet and talk with you. Sometimes, when she is up late at night doing homework, it is your music she has playing, calmly helping her along. Anyway, shortly after the Cain Park show, Anna and I made a pact to see you together, whenever and wherever possible. Maintaining a connection with your 14 year old daughter is not always an easy feat, so for this I thank you. Anna and I will be in Peterborough in February to see you at Folk Under the Clock! This time we are bringing my Mom, so there will be three generations there to listen to your wonderful stories and beautiful songs!

A Lovely Bird Story

Hi David,

My husband and I saw your show in Peterborough this winter, and had such a wonderful time. I was the one who "whoooo whooed" (timidly) for Elphin. I do know the place quite well, my Dad lived next door to Vern and Judy Wheeler for 15 years. I've spent a lot of time wandering those marshes that back up to the village, and waiting for the first red winged blackbirds.

I was really affected by the incredible story about your mum and the birds. I am a birder by long habit and really do feel they are emissaries. I want to tell you my best bird story, because I feel like you are a person who can appreciate a good one. Your music is such sweet thing in our family's household, I just wanted to give you a little thing back, another bird story about beginnings.
Nine years ago, in spring, I was cleaning up in our meadow and suddenly felt quite awful and figured I better get back to the house and rest. As I went home I reflected upon the absense of my usual cycles and realized what the nauseous, exhasted feeling probably was; pregnancy. As I approached home my roomate came out on the porch in a panic exclaiming "there's a bird trapped in the kitchen and I can't catch it!" I went in and quickly caught the wee little winter wren. It sat stunned on my hand for a moment as I stood in the sunshine granting it's freedom, and then bolted off. Two weeks later my husband and I were sitting on the porch contemplating the positive pregnacy test I'd just completed. We were surprised and scared. As we talked about what we should do, whether we were ready, I said; "I wish I knew what a bird in the house means? That moment felt so significant." My husband replied " I don't know about that, but I know I've read somewhere that the wren symbolizes the soul of a child". At the exact moment those words came from his lips a winter wren came blazing out of the bushes and flew right into the side of his head! We stared at each other, laughing, knowing we'd been told: this spirit had to arrive. We took the leap and named our daughter Wren, which suits her perfectly.

My niece and I were just at a concert of David's in Waterloo last week. It was the first time she'd heard David, and we both enjoyed the concert SO much!!! She is now as big a David Francey fan as I am. We were blown away by Craig's talent too. He is an outstanding musician. I'm enjoying his CD at this very moment.

I also wanted to say how beautiful both of your photograph collections are. I was so excited as I scrolled through each picture, thinking I wish I had seen those places myself but the next best thing was seeing your beautiful "capturings". Thank you for sharing them on your website.

Tremendously entertaining show!

I remember now which one of David's song I played on my "Patchwork Blues" radio show of a few years back - it was "Morning Train", from the Live Tour Artists sampler CD.

I'd forgotten all about him since then, until Steve Jackson of CHIP FM reintroduced me to his wonderful music and humour!

Just wanted to tell David that I meant to tell him, when he autographed my CD last night, that I think he is a wonderful balladeer and raconteur.

David, your songs are melodious, your voice gentle and comforting, the words of your songs express our universal experiences of loss and love (such wonderful love songs) and aging and the human condition. One of my favourite lines: “And the heart that’s breaking never makes a sound.” Ain’t that the truth?!

I have virtually all of your CDs now. And am really enjoying the new one. (Listening to it now. )

From Wawa to Elliot Lake

Hello Beth,

It as if I already know you, David was fond of speaking your name and some special moments you both endured, as too the live CD.

I’m from Wawa, Ont.(originally from Nova Scotia) And we travelled down to Elliot Lake (6hrs plus) to catch your husband and Craig. It was a good show although I believe we were the youngest in attendance as I’m sure you are aware that Elliot Lake is a retirement town. I believe David can concur.

I first heard a David Francey song about 2 months ago on a special program on Folkroots on Sat radio and Jesus, there it was; first a storyteller in my style of music and second, an accent that couldn’t of gone any better than toast and peanut butter.

I’d just like to pass on a big hello to David from the Wawa crew, and hope all is well on the rest of his tour, I will be driving down later to catch a show in southern Ontario.

P.S. If he doesn’t remember me, I’m the one who will be trying hard to get him and yourself up here in Wawa for a private get-together for a few close friends - and I was driving the Bentley.

Thoughts on Bus Stations

I was on a long drive to pick my son up from college for Thanksgiving, and I was listening to and reflecting on “Ankle Tattoo.” During 2 summers while in college and then some in graduate school I earned my living working in Greyhound bus stations. And since I was an employee, travelling was nearly free and I traveled a lot by bus. So I saw my share of stations and patrons. “Ankle Tattoo” wonderfully caught many of the station sights, and the “regulars.” However, you missed one that was important to me.

For me the only thing that made working at the stations fun was seeing the reunions. People travel by bus, instead of by plane, because they have more time than money. Any you sensed, these reunions didn’t happen that often. Grandma coming to visit the family for a stay during the summer. The folks picking up the child for a Christmas break from college. A soldier coming home. The tears, the joys, the hugs, the laughter, the crying—and then everyone cheerfully leaving together.

I last worked at the bus station 30 years ago, but I still have visions of these reunions.

Ashtabula and the Marine Museum

I am writing to thank you for the wonderfully moving song Ashtabula. My late father, who grew up right near the current site of the Ashtabula Marine Museum, shipped out as a night cook (dishwasher) in the 1930s.

He retired as senior deck officer in the old Cleveland Cliffs line in 1976, bought a sailboat and went right back out on the water. He passed away peacefully of old age on the 24th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, November 10, 1999.

This past summer my two sisters, their spouses, various kids, and my wife and I got together in Ashtabula for FinnFest 2007. Nancy and I had a surprise waiting for the rest of the family, a display at the Ashtabula Marine Museum honoring our dad's distinguished career as a Great Lakes mariner. (See enclosed photo. That's me flanked by my sisters.)

Then a friend turned me on to your beautiful song. It brought tears to my eyes. I've ordered two more copies of the CD to send to my sisters as holiday gifts. I'll bet folding money that both will bawling like babies after hearing Ashtabula.

Anyhow, thank you again for that amazing song. All the best to you and yours in the new year.

We had the great pleasure of seeing David & Craig, in Rossland, last Thursday night. It was just by fluke that we heard of the performance & were able to attend. WOW! We first heard of David on CBC Radio & have wanted to see him ever since. We certainly were not disappointed.The combination of David & Craig is magical. We purchased his latest cd,"Right of Passage" & have been playing it nonstop ever since.
We would have liked to stay & chat after the performance, but I had to be at work for 6a.m. the next day & we had to travel back to Grand Forks....we were very glad that we went, anyway, as it looks like he won't be back this way for quite some time.

I appreciate the convergence of musicality and poetry! , and your ability to poetically articulate the essence and meaning of ‘place’. So, thanks for that!

Second, I grew up in a tiny town just south of the Manitoba-Minnesota border in an agricultural/small town, hockey culture. ‘Skating rink’ is the winters of my childhood; ‘Torn screen door’ names a reality quite close to home as well…among others. Cheers!

Finally, my lot and joy in life is working with words. I teach homiletics... Were my students (and myself for that matter) able to weave words toward an expression of reality as your lyrics, I’d feel quite good. So, thanks for the words!

New Jerusalem and the Middle East - an interesting perspective

I was just in the middle east last week, staying mostly in Jerusalem but traveling to several locations in the West Bank. I was listening to the song about New Jerusalem before I went (great CD by the way!) It sure is a complex time over there, I came home with a lot deeper understanding than is possible through the news, but not with any clear answers. The song captures well the ever present fear that Israelis live with as part of daily life. There is a whole other side, the hardships of Palestinians who are driven to the fringe of society by all the security measures and differential laws. We visited refugee camps where people have been living since 1948, lots of poverty and frustration there...... it's a place of such contrasts, the beautiful old buildings and the settings for so many of the Bble stories, and the stark reality of today. The Christians we met with were mostly Palestinian which was how we got to hear so much about their perspective....... they often referred to the phrase "living stones" in reference to the people there today. They would use it in this way, "don't come just to see the stones here (old buildings, landscape etc.) but see the living stones here too, (the real people living here today, I think they meant espcially the Christians as they are a minority within a minority, many have left, many of those with options.) Anyway, as you can tell i had quite an experience there, lots to tell. Sorry to go on about this, but you started it with the song.....NS

I'm a all out, 24 year old Metallica fan, but man oh man I love David Francey's music. I only have 2 cd's right now, Far end, and Waking Hour. Both un-real. I live in Arizona in the winter's, but when I get home (Deux Riveres, Ont - just past Deep River) I'll be catching a show for sure!

San Diego Fan - a lovely letter

Hello David,

This is from your San Diego fan... the one that took the train up to Portland to see you? It wasn't just me - my husband was with me and he's as much a fan as I am (only not quite so noisy about it). He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease when he was 37 - he's now 51 and retired on disability from his life's work and love, computer programming. I think I come in there somewhere, but it's not always easy for me to find my allocated spot! As the time drew near for us to go to Portland, he was having a rough time and I suggested that perhaps we take a plane at some later point in time to attend one of your concerts. He said no - he was afraid that if he didn't do it now, he might never be able to do it at all.

The trip was our first major train ride, and we traveled from the south to the north through the Cascade mountains. It was absolutely beautiful! Three or four hours of gorgeous, huge, snow-covered pines and mountains. We had our noses stuck to the window throughout the mountain range. It was dark on the way back, and the ambient light from the train and the shadows it created made the trees look as if they were marching in some slow forest cadence that we couldn't quite see. It probably wouldn't impress you nearly as much as it did two Californians - you get to see snow-covered trees while shoveling the blasted stuff and trying to write a 'happy' song about the whole process, but it was pretty awesome to us.

We love your music so much. The values of family, peace, caring for others and patriotism, (even tho it's a bit slanted sometimes {the patriotism, I mean}) are the things missing in today's music. The honesty and humor in your songs and stories strike the most basic of human chords; 'tis a rare gift you have, and just the right voice in which to sing it. Don't worry about doing this 'right' or 'wrong' - when you autographed my CD, you said it was a bit daunting..........but David, you were born to do this; it's absolutely why you're here, and they'll be no stoppin' you now! It just took a few years for it to happen.

The Portland concert was wonderful, and the greatest proof of that was this: the audience only stopped applauding between songs because we wanted to hear you sing one more time - and why waste perfectly good singing time on too much hand-clapping? Keep on movin' forward David, and like the Pied Piper, you'll soon have a string of loyal fans streaming along behind you - across both countries!

A Gift - Right of Passage

Hi. I just wanted to write and say how thankful I am for David's new CD, Right of Passage. I ordered it in early march and couldn’t wait for it to come. I watched the mail everyday and by the time it came it was as if I had recieved a gift from some one. I am a loyal David Francey fan and listen to his music often. He has visited my town of Winona, Minnesota twice since I have known of him and I hope he comes here again soon. The first time I went, my Dad managed to get tickets around the time the Waking Hour came out and we really enjoyed it. Now David has become a common thread my family can gather around because we all enjoy and appreciate him so much. Thank you Thank you Thank you for the great music and good times.

Torn Screen Door in Ireland

I purchased Torn Screen Door ages ago after hearing the song played on Berkeley, CA's KPFA. I have since moved to Ireland and live in Athlone, next door to the oldest pub in Ireland (900 AD), Sean's Bar. This Sunday at the afternoon session a local player produced his guitar and played a fantastic Irish-y arrangement of Torn Screen Door. I thought David might get a laugh out of hearing a traditional Irish-style version of his song. In any case, love the music - any chance of an Irish tour? Slan, S.

Message from a Red-winged Blackbird

I hope you could pass this on to David in advance of his performance in Bellows Falls, VT with Dar Williams.

A few years ago in BF I shared with David my connection with the Red-Winged Blackbird. A male rw-blackbird landed on our balcony railing at just the precise moment when our minister, sister, and I were talking of my mother's gracious qualities of her life on the day of her death! The RW Blackbird looked into the living room for 2 minutes and then flew away. This is not typical behavior of this bird and I have always considered this to be an omen. The message from my dad who predeceased her - she's crossed the river and is fine. One month later when we spread her ashes in front of the house, the RW Blackbirds swarmed around the pond just when we spread her ashes. Ho.

So David's song of the Red-Winged Blackbird has extraordinary meaning for me, and I hope/ask it will be part of the program in BF.

By the way, my Grandmother came to the US from Ayr, Scotland when she was 10, and David came to Canada from Ayrshire when he was 10!!!

Already have the tickets for the 27th and looking forward to the performance. I'll be in my Campbell kilt.

Salt Spring Success

I just wanted to thank David and Craig for an evening I won’t soon forget.
I attended the folk club for the first time tonight in the company of a friend whom I thought I was helping out (season ticket subscriber, wife out of town, a tad lonely – you get the picture). The salmon was terrific. Good crowd. The opening act was a local whom I had heard many times before. I was planning on an early night because I have a busy day tomorrow but when all is said and done I am disappointed that there was only one encore. I could have listened to you guys for another hour easily. All this and I have never heard of (let alone listened to) David or Craig before. No, I do not listen to (nor watch) the CBC. I guess I am a “bad Canadian”.
During the show, David was joking about his mother going on and on but I think the fruit doesn’t fall very far from the tree. The good thing about his verboseness is that he is the real thing. Craig is simply a craftsman of superior quality and a joy to watch as well as listen to.
Keep your lights burning bright boys!

We've just bought The First Set - Live From Folk Alley, having heard a track on Mike Harding's show on BBC Radio2. It's fantastic. We'd heard Annie's House... We both really, really enjoy the songs and the style of delivery, so if there's any chance of David coming the UK, we'd go out of our way to see him.
We live on Teesside (near Middlesbrough) so we could even show him some industrial landscapes! all the best. N and E

I just received your new C.D. Live From Folk Alley. The best friggin thing I have ever heard. I am originally from Newfoundland but my wife and I just had to move due to the economy and the lack of jobs on the rock. We are now currently in Nunavut. Everyday is an adventure....
I just wanted to tell you that your music is the cats ass, better than a bottle of rum, skink stuff! I laughed at your stories and then I got homesick and starting bawling my eyes out. It felt good all the same, it has been a long time since I got a good snotty cry in. Thank you so much.....the music is very moving to me, good on ya! Bringing in the New Year with David

We had "Skating Rink" on the CD player as we ended 2006. I've seen you play a couple of times at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival and then again last year at the Capilano College theatre. What would I like to say to you? You have brought me the voice of calm and reason in the middle of a crazy world. A Family Treasure

Good evenin'/good mornin' David,
You were quite busy after the concert signing CD's, so we never had the chance to thank you for such a trooper's performance! Putting out like you did with walking pneumonia was admirable to say the least. On our hour's drive home - we - my wonderful and also gorgeous wife - agreed that we'd go see you even if you only told stories! You are one of the most enjoyable spinner of tales we've heard! Your humour is self-effacing and right down to earth. The artistry of the perfectly chosen word and turn of phrase was a sheer delight all evening. We came close to falling out of our chairs with laughter at many of the anecdotes.
Thanks again for coming to play in "our yard". Get better quickly! Cheers!

Hi there!
Please tell David that the concert in Orillia was wonderful - I could have stayed all night to listen to him tell stories and sing songs! I had taken my 21 year old son with me and two friends and everyone was blown away . I have seen him several times but it was the first time for the other three.
I don't suppose I can say anything that hasn't already been said more eloquently by others before but I add my voice to the chorus of David fans.

Long may he live , be inspired by his love for you and continue to write beautiful songs. We are all better for it.

From Russia with Love

This past summer I moved to Russia, on my own, never having lived abroad before, or even having travelled to Eastern Europe. I don't even speak Russian. Yes, I am crazy. I am Canadian - Saskatchewanian, in fact - through and through, and Russia certainly is not. It has been a tough transition, but your music has made this giant step out of my comfort zone a little bit easier. Listening to your albums, especially "Live at Folk Alley," makes me feel like I have an old friend near by - listening to your stories, and the music that has long touched my heart, never fails to soothe my soul, make me laugh, and put my life in perspective. And the way you speak about your undying love for Beth absolutely melts my heart.
